According to the “Manual of Good Practices for Sustainable Cattle Ranching in Guatemala,” Petén and Izabal are two of the departments with the largest cattle inventories in the country. Construction of the road section connecting these departments, carried out by the General Directorate of Roads and the Army Corps of Engineers, began in the 1960s. The story continued in 1977 with the construction of the Río Dulce Bridge, the longest bridge in the country at 860 meters, which was completed and inaugurated in 1980.
